Urban Greenhouse

The explosion in urban growth presents opportunities as well as challenges to our environment and our food systems. Many cities start looking for ways to feed themselves sustainably and to create a liveable and healthy environment for urban dwellers. In this project a multidisciplinary student team is challenged to bring professional food production into an urban neighborhood, connecting it with local resource flows and e.g. local (smart) energy systems. The neighborhood for which the urban greenhouse will be designed is the 'Bajes Kwartier' in Amsterdam. Using a combination of health sciences and engineering studies we try to come up with an innovative concept. The main pillars for the technical part of the concept consist of a combination of the latest in-house farming developments, renewable energy sources and the incorporation of the local resource flows. This concept not only takes food production into account but also connects with the design with the neighborhood. This creates several branding opportunities and could facilitate local education about food production.
